10/31/2009 Avalanche Level 1
This is a unique opportunity for students to take an Avalanche Level 1 course sponsored by the National Ski Patrol. During this course, participants will learn how to safely travel in the backcountry. Course topics include: types of avalanches, characteristics of avalanches, how avalanches form and release, assessing avalanche terrain, trip planning and preparation, back country travel techniques, decision making, and avalanche rescue. Participants will receive a course completion card, upon mastering all course material. (Level 2) Good physical conditioning is necessary; little experience is required; and little technical knowledge is necessary. The dates of this course are Oct 31 & Nov 1 for classroom sessions. The field component of this course is Jan 9 & Jan 10 where students will practice their search and rescue skills. Participants will be expected to purchase their own lift ticket at Silver Ski Resort. A discount will be provided. (No Transportation or lodging is provided for the field section of this course.) There is a mandatory pre trip meeting for this trip. These pre trip meetings are designed to give patrons the necessary information for the trip, as well as answer any questions. The Pre-Trip meeting for this adventure is Wednesday, October 28th at 6:30pm in the Outdoor Recreation Center. Please know that this course fee does not include any equipment rental. You will need some specialty items such as: skis, a beacon, a shovel, and a probe. All of these items are not provided with registration. The ORC rents some of these items, However, supply is limited. Call 335-509-1892 to make a reservation.
