08/20/2009 New Student Adventures: Backpacking Eagle Cap Wilderness
Congratulations and welcome to WSU! Before embarking on your college career, join us for an adventure.
WSU’s New Student Adventures (WSUNSA) is an optional wilderness orientation program for new students. It’s a challenging and rewarding outdoor experience designed to ease the transition into university life. Beginners with little to no previous wilderness experience are encouraged to participate.
In this backpacking trip to the Eagle Cap Wilderness, you’ll have four days to explore the magnificent Wallowa Mountains. The Wallowa’s are about four hours from campus in Northeastern Oregon, and are home to rugged peaks near 10,000 feet in elevation, spectacular lakes and mountain streams, and plentiful wildlife, making this area one of the top sites in the region for outdoor recreation. By traveling in a small group of about six participants and two leaders, you will work as a team, hiking and camping in a new location each day. Learn backcountry camp skills such as how to purify your drinking water, cook on a backpacking stove, and how to hike and camp utilizing “Leave No Trace” traveling and camping techniques to preserve the environment for future generations. This trip is only open to new students at Washington State University.
The pretrip meeting for this trip is on Tuesday, August 18th 2009. Please plan to meet at the Outdoor Recreation Center at 6:30 pm. We will discuss the route we are taking and talk about all necessary gear. Please make sure you have hiking boots that you have worn before this trip, so you won't get blisters. The trip will be leaving on Thursday, August 20th at 8:00 am. Feel free to call the ORC with any questions.
Prerequisite
This trip is only open to new students at Washington State University.
