02/25 Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (Slideshow)
Presented by Jonathan Stahl (Coordinator, Outdoor Recreation) and Amanda Tyson Stahl (Instructional Technician, Earth & Environmental Sciences), this slideshow and talk will provide an inside view of the planning and logistics involved in a thru-hike of the 2,650 mile long Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. In this free presentation, we will share tips and strategies for planning and conducting a long-distance hike, recounting some of our adventures along the way.
Extending from Mexico to Canada, The PCT traverses some of the most spectacular scenery in the American West. Typically taking 5-6 months to complete, the trail begins in the scorching heat of southern California, gradually ascends above 10,000 feet to wind its way through the high passes of the Sierra Nevada, and concludes with a stunning tour of the Cascade volcanoes in Oregon and Washington. Northbound thru-hikers plan to end their trek just beyond the Canadian border. They will have spent the better part of a year living within wilderness areas, National Forest, or National Park lands.
